It has long been debated whether we should continue to expand our general education. Many now say that it is time we paid a little more attention to technical education.

General education or liberal education aims at moral development where as technical education is job oriented. Liberal education teaches students to think critically, develop values, understand traditions, respect diverse cultures and opinions, and use knowledge for the edification of their society. Technical education, on the other hand, imparts theoretical and practical knowledge in some particular branch of applied science Technical knowledge equips a person with necessary skills to have an edge in today's world joblessness.

In our country, policymakers have constantly ignored technical education. The old policy of the British colonisers, which aimed at creating clerks, has so far been carried forward. This is why we are lagging behind in terms of technological skills, and we have to give away our own gasftelds to foreign companies. We have to buy our own natural resources from those companies who only help us extract these resources. They become owners by mere technological skills.

Expansion of liberal education has not helped our economic progress. We have produced graduates who lack necessary skills to find jobs. In many foreign countries, there is huge demand for skilled work force. If our people were technically skilled, we could export workers and earn huge remittance.

However, we cannot ignore liberal education in today's world of growing religious intolerance and moral degradation. General education and technical education, in fact, are complementary to each other. For complete development of the individual, it is important to maintain a balance between the two.
