একটি কারুশিল্প ব্যক্তিগত সৃজনশীলতা ও সাম্প্রদায়িক নান্দনিকতা, ব্যবহারিক যথাযোগ্যতা ও মানবিক মূল্যবোধের মিথস্ক্রিয়ার দ্বারা আকৃতি পেয়ে থাকে। কারুশিল্পের একটি বৈশিষ্ট্য হলো এর মাধ্যমে শিল্পী নিজ সম্প্রদায় ও বাজারের বিস্তৃত ও চিরপরিবর্তনশীল সাংস্কৃতিক আকঙ্খার কেন্দ্রে নিজেকে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করার প্রত্যাশা করেন। বাজার একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় হলেও শিল্পীর নিজ সম্প্রদায়ের নান্দনিকতা কারুশিল্পের ধরণ ও উপাদান নির্ধারণে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় হিসেবে কাজ করে থাকে। বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় জাদুঘরের সংগ্রহের একটি অংশ গড়ে দিয়েছে ১৯৪০-এর দশকের দিনাজপুর থেকে সংগৃহীত অপূর্ব সুন্দর পোড়ামাটির পুতুল। সেগুলোর অধিকাংশই গ্রাম্য মেলা থেকে কোনো সৌখিন খদ্দেরের দ্বারা ক্রয় করা হয়েছিল। নিঃসন্দেহে ওগুলো ভোগ্যপণ্যই, কিন্তু পুতুলগুলো এমনভাবে সামাজিক নান্দনিকতার প্রতিফলন ঘটিয়েছে যে বাজার চাহিদা তার নিজস্ব পছন্দ-অপছন্দ ওগুলোর ওপর চাপিয়ে দিতে সক্ষম হয়নি।
